Should you ever pass on a great person Civ 6? I generally pass only when I see one coming soon that I really want. If you pass, you can still get said great person in a round or two. Great people can be passed upon, it doesn't eat your points and you can either save for the next one (see the information below each GP) or you can spend money to get another one. There's also a bug, like you saw, that sometimes causes them to sit in your cities. If attacked, they teleport back to their owner's capital. These points are earned by Specialists, as well as several Wonders and Social Policies. Great Person Points for Great Artists, Engineers, Merchants, and Scientists accumulate in cities, and when a city accumulates enough points towards a particular Great Person, (s)he is "born" in that city. All but one of the Scientists provide no passive effect, and their activated effects are a one-time use ability that always aids in either the accumulation of Science or the progression towards a Scientific Victory. The Great Scientists are one of the most straight-forward Great People types. They provide at least +8 Science when worked by a city, so place them on a grassland or hill tile to get extra production or food out of that tile. The primary use of Great Scientists is the construction of the Academy tile improvement.

When should you use great scientists in Civ 5? In Gods & Kings and Brave New World, this ability is replaced by the "Boost Science" ability, which lets you immediately gain a large number of science points based on the science output of your civilization. In vanilla Civilization V, the Great Scientist can use "Discover Technology" to grant you a free technology. What do you do with a great scientist in Civ 5?
